Being three weeks into a regular exercise and healthy eating routine, I caught a glimpse of myself in a full length mirror yesterday and was disappointed.
Of course my rational side says, “you didn’t get to this point overnight, you aren’t going to get back overnight either.” But I’ve been working so hard, I should see a reward in the mirror!
Forget that my body feels better and I’m noticing movements that are now easy. Forget that I can pump out a few regular pushups again. Or that my pants are getting looser. I should see a difference by now, right?
Ah, the lack of patience we have with ourselves.
If we diet on Monday, we should be skinny by the weekend and if we start a business in January, we should be profitable by summer.
Truth is, and we know this, change takes time. We need to plan, do the work, have some patience, and be nice to ourselves.
Tomorrow when you put in the work towards your goal of a pretty garden, a short walk, a new adventure, or whatever, go ahead and do the Rocky Balboa. We won’t judge.
