You weren’t expecting it.
Why? Why did you do it???
The hesitant hug, unexpected cheek kiss, forgotten name, staring silence, misdirected email or text- all things we experience in social interactions throughout our lives.
What makes you more awesome is how you handle the awkwardness.
Sure, your instinct is to run away and pretend it was your socially inept twin, Jocelyn. But if you exit too soon, the event and your lack of situation management may be seared into the other person’s memory. So long future collaboration and communication.
Try to linger in the situation for a minute and give yourself a chance.
The ability to think on your feet, laugh at yourself, apologize, and recover will mean more to the recipient than the offense. Handled well, the other person will view you as more personable and be willing to encounter you again.
Just be sure to show other people grace when it’s their turn for the awkward rendezvous. It’s not if, but when.
